MAURITIUS

Situated east of Madagascar, Mauritius is over 2000 kilometres off the east coast of Southern Africa and measures 45 kilometres wide and 65 kilometres long. This Indian Ocean jewel has a long history and was known to the Arabs as early as the 10th century although it was not ‘officially’ discovered until 1505 by the Portuguese. Mauritius gained its independence in 1968.

The culture is a wonderful blend of English, French, Chinese, Creole, Hindu and Muslim and the warmth and hospitality of the people can be felt the moment you arrive. English is the official language on the island, although French and Creole are mostly spoken.

Mark Twain described a Mauritius holiday as ‘heaven on Earth’ with its lush forests, streams and waterfalls all surrounded by the ubiquitous coconut palm. How right he was! In addition to the turquoise and inviting Indian Ocean waters, stunning white sand beaches and beautiful hotels, Mauritius offers a host of interesting places of interest.  In the north, Grand Baie offers some excellent shopping and at night is without doubt the best place to experience the local nightlife. And, in the small towns and villages of Floreal, Curepipe and Quatre Bornes, there are some great shopping bargains to be found.
