ABU DHABI

Abu Dhabi, the largest of the 7 Emirates, is the United Arab Emirate’s Federal capital, owing much of its wealth to the discovery of oil almost 60 years ago. The city has a short history dating back only 250 years. In 1760, a nomadic tribe discovered water on the island and built their first township there, where it remained a fishing village until oil was discovered.

One of the best ways of getting to know the city is by walking along the famous Corniche promenade, one of the largest in the Middle East. There is plenty to see and do in Abu Dhabi and shopping is a favourite pastime for locals and tourists alike, with everything from gold and jewellery to electrical goods; all found for considerably less than at home.

Just a short drive from Abu Dhabi is Liwa Oasis, gateway to the Rub Al Khali desert known as the Empty Quarter and Bedouin villages nestled among the sand dunes, wild camels and isolated agricultural areas make this perfect for 4x4 adventures.

Abu Dhabi is a popular holiday destination and in addition to sandy beaches, crystal blue waters, all-year round sunshine and superb quality hotels, there is also the irresistible mystique of the Arabian desert.
